Announcement of
Candidacy |
| On September 8th, 1999 I announced my candidacy to
represent Vermont in the United States Senate in the upcoming
year 2000 elections.
I believe most of us in Vermont want decisions made on our
behalf in Washington to be thoughtful, even-handed, fair
and to reflect long-range thinking.
I believe many of us feel there is much too much
partisanship in Washington these days and that it diminishes the
effectiveness of our national political and legislative process. As
we head into a new century and into a new millennium, I believe
there is substantial need for improvement.
Accordingly, I intend to speak out on behalf of all citizens. I will
strive to be non-partisan, to work with Republicans, Democrats
and Independents to improve the democratic process and the
quality of legislation being enacted into law. Continued

Finance Reports |
| The Federal Election Commission requires periodic financial reporting of my campaign activities.
As a strong advocate for campaign finance reform,
I plan to comply strictly with federal law. |

MMy Walk The
Length of Vermont for Campaign Finance Reform |
|
|

|
| On Thursday, September 30th, 1999 I began at the Canadian border
my walk the length of Vermont
on U.S. Route 7 to advocate for campaign finance and democratic
process reform. |

my positions on campaign finance reform and related reforms of
our democratic process click here. |
| It was a wonderful walk!. Our Vermont foliage was near peak
and the weather was great-most of the time. There were
also a couple of days of driving wind and rain. Along the way I
talked with reporters from newspapers, radio and television
stations. Lots of folks honked, gave thumbs up, or stopped to
introduce themselves and talk. |
|

|
| Two weeks of walking and 3 rest days later I arrived at the
Massachusetts border on Friday, October 15th. Total walking
distance was about 175 miles.
As I completed my walk, the United States Senate was
debating measures which only partially addressed the problem of
big contributions from special interests which influence the
political process. Despite legislation to enact partial reforms which recently
passed the House of Representative and a slim majority of
Senators publicly ready to pass related legislation in the
Senate, a minority of Senators prevented a vote by
filibustering. Supportive Senators were not able to muster
the 60 votes necessary to break the filibuster.
