Organizations throughout the country are working on the issue of money in politics at the federal, state, and local levels. Here are links to some of the groups doing money-in-politics research, disclosure, and reform work.

National Disclosure and Research Resources:

  • Federal Election Commission
    Images of hard copies of campaign finance reports by candidates, parties, and PACs and other information from the U.S. agency that oversees campaign finance laws.

  • IRE/NICAR Campaign Finance Page
    Archives of campaign finance stories from around the country, databases, lists of experts, links, and other reporting tools from Investigative Reporters and Editors.

  • Center for Public Integrity
    Non-partisan research group that conducts analyses of government ethics, public service, and public policy issues.

  • Project Vote Smart
    Researches and tracks voting records, evaluations by special interest groups, and campaign contributions for more than 13,000 candidates and elected officials nationwide.

  • Annenberg Public Policy Center
    University of Pennsylvania-affiliated research center studies the role of advertising and the media in federal politics, including the use of 'issue ads' in campaigns.

  • Thomas: Congress' Official Site
    Includes searchable databases for bill status, sponsors of legislation, and committee actions. Congressional Record online, plus links to member and committee home pages, are also here.

National Advocacy Group Resources:

  • Common Cause
    Citizens' lobbying group tracks the influence of money in congressional and presidential politics and advocates campaign finance reforms.

  • Public Campaign
    Advocacy organization working to promote 'clean money' campaign finance reforms at the state and federal levels.

  • National Voting Rights Institute
    Non-profit legal organization that seeks to advance campaign finance reforms through the courts.

  • New Politics Project
    National Civic League project to study and promote innovative political reforms implemented across the country at the state and local level.

  • Public Citizen
    Ralph Nader-founded consumer group monitors Congress and lobbies on a range of consumer, health, safety, and good government issues -- including campaign finance.

  • U.S. Public Interest Research Group
    National advocacy office for the state PIRGs, non-partisan research and advocacy groups promoting reforms and tracking money in politics at the state level.

  • League of Women Voters Education Fund
    National organization works to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government and to increase understanding of major policy issues.

  • Alliance for Better Campaigns
    A nonprofit, nonpartisan public interest group
    that seeks to improve the discourse of elections by encouraging broadcasters to cover campaigns beyond sound bites and attack ads.

International Resources:

  • Transparency International
    A non-governmental organization dedicated to increasing government accountability and curbing both international and national corruption. Includes sections in English, French, German, and Spanish.

State Resources:

Think Tanks:

  • Aspen Institute Campaign Finance Program
    International nonprofit educational institution promotes policy dialogue on key issues for political leaders.

  • Brennan Center for Justice
    A nonprofit legal institute at New York University School of Law that has become a leading voice in campaign finance reform efforts at the national and local levels.

  • Brookings Institution Campaign Finance Project
    Studies, reports, and commentaries promoting  and analyzing campaign finance reforms from the non-partisan think tank, including the valuable Campaign Finance Sourcebook.

  • Cato Foundation
    Policy papers by libertarian-oriented think tank, which generally favors full deregulation of campaign finance system.

  • Citizens' Research Foundation
    Non-partisan research organization at the University of Southern California committed to broadening public knowledge of political financing and election reform.

  • Heritage Foundation
    Conservative think tank, generally critical of campaign finance reform proposals, posts studies and reports on money in politics and lobbying at its governing section.
